I love living off the grid, because it meets my desire and need to save as much money on outgoings as is possible. When we moved to our second off grid property, we decided that EVERYTHING had to be better and one of the main things was the need to cut outgoing expenses. Well we have been here on our second off grid property for 9 months and we have really made some huge progress in this.

One of the first noticable changes was the mortgage. We have cut it in half! When we have finished building the property and started working outside the gate on a more regular basis, this will be whittled down. Obviously the best thing would be to have no mortgage, and therefore cut this awful outgoing expense. Our mortgage is actually tiny compared to most people I know, but it is still there and needs to be gone. So a major job to work on that for sure.

The second noticable change was that we haven't had to buy any petrol or diesel for the generators. In the last property, our solar system was so poor that we were spending on average $100 per week. With our new set up on this property we haven't had to run a generator at all. Even the power tools are run off the batteries.

The third big change was, we are now brewing our own alcohol. Although the set up cost was around $1000 we have already not only paid for that but have more than tripled the savings on purchased alcohol.

The fourth biggie was the new pantry, which is able to stock at least 12 months worth of food. We have been buying so much on special and putting it into stock which is like an insurance policy against hard times. Not only buying specials but I am now dehydrating and bottling food at home. This is great because I am able to take advantage of gifts of fresh produce and specials. When our hydroponics are set up, then all the excess produce will be able to be stored for later, so that we will be saving more money.

When I compare our lifestyle to that of the normal everyday person, buying or renting a house on the grid, I can only say, what a blessing it is that we chose this lifestyle. Not only do we not have the big mortgage, the electricity, water, gas and home phone bills coming in each month, but we actually spend less than those people who buy their weeks shopping from the supermarket and have no back up plan.

As we are heading into our 60's we are looking at ways to minimalise our need to earn money just to pay for our survival. We would like not to have to work full time for ever. We would like our lifestyle to include more time doing what we want and less time working just to make money to survive. Ultimately, if we can work outside the gate 1 to 2 days a week at most then I would call that a major success. And when the mortgage is gone then even that could be cut down.

Yes, we will still have council rates, car regos and maintenaince and petrol for running them, internet and mobile phone bills, so not working is not an option. But not having to work much is the aim. Wish us luck........
