If you are like Steve and I, you will no doubt have a preppers mentality. What I mean by this, is that we like to 'prep' for tough times. You never know what is around the corner. We have survived natural disasters here and we understand the need to be prepared. I have talked about this before and you will find an article around here if you want to read it. But today I want to talk about another idea. This one is about having essential oils, stocked and ready to use in your stores.
I like Essential Oils because they are natural, potent, small and easy to transport. But the biggest thing I like about them is that they all have multiple uses. For instance, Lemon Essential Oil is a great cleanser for your house, the air and your body. It is able to be used as a detox to help rid yourself of heavy metals etc that don't belong in your body. But Lemon is also great as a degreaser for dishes or even greasy parts of motors. And if it is diffused then it cleans the air. Imagine if you have been through floods and after you have cleaned up there will still be a smell lingering. Diffusing Lemon will literally clean the air in the house.
I am going to list about 10 different Essential Oils and pre made blends and why I feel they are absolute must haves for every prepper. Or even if you aren't a prepper these are the ones that should be in every home if you prefer going the natural road as we do.
Please remember when using Essential oils that you respect their potency. More is not better. You only need a drop or two usually. Did you know that 1 drop of peppermint oil is equal to 28 tea bags? That is to explain how potent they really are. Also remember to dilute them and if you are using them for kids or frail people that dilute them down even more.
I only use and recommend doTERRA Essential Oils because they are the purest on the market. I trust them for me, my family and my pets and I would never suggest that you ingest any other brand. The pre made blends I will mention here are all made by doTERRA.
PEPPERMINT
Support Healthy Breathing. Dilute a drop of Peppermint oil combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil and place under your nose to support open airways and help you breathe easily.
A Hot Feet Fix. Add Peppermint to a cold compress and cool down your overworked feet.
Break Away From Summer Heat. Keep a spray bottle of water with a few drops of Peppermint essential oil nearby, especially when you REALLY need to cool down!
Could You Start A Fire With Your Breath? Use a drop of Peppermint with Lemon in water for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse. It freshens breath and builds confidence in your close encounters.
Take A Deep Breath. Inhale deeply to invigorate lungs and increase alertness.
Stressed? Apply to neck and forehead with Lavender to relieve tension and pressure.
A Joint Effort. Peppermint is a great way to cool joints without taking an ice bath. It helps to soothe occasional muscle and joint discomfort.
Tummy Calmer. Rub on the stomach or take internally for occasional digestive discomfort.
Shake It Up. Add a drop of Peppermint to your chocolate Trim Shake for a yummy twist.
Zero To Satiety In Seconds. Most people eat until they feel full. Diffusing Peppermint will help reign in the urge to snack on junk food. It’s a good way to control appetite and to feel full faster.
Out On The Open Road. Don’t fall asleep at the wheel! Inhale Peppermint from a handkerchief or straight from the bottle to perk up on long drives.
Awaken Your Senses. Before your next work out, apply a bit of Peppermint to your chest or just take a deep breathe straight from the open bottle. Then, after your workout add to shampoo to stimulate your senses and help with scalp health.
Approaching Deadlines Means Long And Late Hours. Rather than grab a Snickers to revitalize you as you ‘go the extra mile’, deeply inhale Peppermint to feel revitalized and ready to go.
Un-Block Writer’s Block. Peppermint can support blood circulation and leave you feeling rejuvenated to keep those creative juices flowing. Simply spritz peppermint on child’s shirt before study time for improved concentration and alertness.
Savour The Combination. Peppermint makes a delicious addition to all things chocolate. Add a drop into your chocolate beverages and baked goods. Yum!
BUG REPELLENT :: Put 1-2 drops of Peppermint in your shampoo, laundry detergent, or on a dryer sheet carried in your pocket to help repel bugs. You can also put a drop on cotton balls and place around windows or other places in your home where bugs could get in.
MOUTH WASH :: Use a drop of Peppermint with a drop of Lemon or On Guard for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse.
SUN BURN SPRAY :: Put 2-3 drops Peppermint with 3-5 drops Lavender in a 60ml glass spray bottle and spray down after a day of too much sun.
MID-DAY PICK-ME-UP :: Drop 1 drop of Peppermint with 1 drop of Frankincense, Lemon, or Wild Orange in your palms, rub together, and take a few deep breaths instead of reaching for the Snickers. Also works better than coffee by itself in the morning!
BODY COOLER :: In the summer time, add 2-3 drops of Peppermint in a 60ml glass spray bottle and carry with you to the gym or anywhere you may sweat excessively. Whip it out and spray yourself down when you feel overheated. You can also rub a few drops into the soles of your feet and along your spine when you're not feeling well and your body is overheated.
RELIEVE STOMACH UPSET :: take 1-2 drops in a veggie capsule to alleviate occasional stomach upset.
SMOOTHIE REFRESHER :: add 1-2 drops to your favourite smoothie recipe for a refreshing twist.
HEAD TENSION :: when you feel head tension coming on, drink a full glass of water with a drop of Peppermint and massage Peppermint into your temples (away from the eyes). Put a drop of On Guard on the roof of your mouth, 1-2 drops of Frankincense on the crown of your head, and massage 1-2 drops of Lavender into your ear lobes for added benefit.
OPEN UP YOUR AIRWAYS :: having trouble breathing? Diffuse 2-4 drops of Peppermint or rub 1-2 drops between your palms and take a few deep belly breaths.
**NOTE: Peppermint is very potent, so less is more! A little goes a long way with this oil, so always start with just one drop and move on from there as needed. Also be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after using Peppermint before touching your face or eyes. If you ever happen to get Peppermint (or any other essential oil) in your eyes, wash them out with fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, or any other carrier oil. Water will only make it worse!
LEMON
Eradicate Undesirable Smells. The next time you have international potpourri of food simultaneously brewing in your apartment complex at dinnertime, be sure to diffuse Lemon to neutralize odors.
Get Rid Of The Sticky Stuff. Lemon essential oil is excellent for removing sticky tree sap, sticker residue and permanent marker. It even gets gum out of hair!
Pump Life Into Your Water. If you unfortunately don’t have great water taste in your town, add Lemon to that pitcher of water in the fridge. Add ice. Shake well. You will love the flavour!
A Remodelers Friend. It is possible to have fresh paint on the walls and a fresh smell in the air! Diffuse lemon essential oil while you repaint or remodel your home.
Road-Trip Relief. The next time you going ‘over the river and through the woods’ on a family road trip, (with family or pets) a little Lemon on cotton balls (other absorbent material) spread over your air vents or goes a long, long way to create a more pleasurable trip.
Perk Up. First, diffuse lemon essential oil to brighten and energize your mood. Then, pamper yourself by mixing a few drops with Tea Tree and fractionated coconut oil and apply on tired, dry, cracked feet.
Flavour Boost. Add a drop of Lemon essential oil anytime you are cooking with lemon juice (Salmon on the BBQ, Lemon meringue pie, Lemon zest) to give it a deeper, more rich flavour. In soothing winter teas, you can simply add Lemon essential oil to warm water, an herbal tea and honey.
Pick-Me-Up. When you lack motivation or energy, try rubbing a drop of Lemon on your hands, the back of your neck or even through your hair. You’ll be amazed at the power of the Lemony aroma!
Smell Lemons, Not Chemicals. Add a couple drops of Lemon essential oil to your dishwater. Adding Lemon will make it a better experience for you while taking advantage of the cleaning qualities in Lemon essential oil! Your glassware will be crystal clean.
Super Study Powers. Diffuse with Peppermint in the classroom or during homework time to help the kids stay awake and focused.
An Original All-Purpose Cleaner. Mix 5-6 drops Lemon essential oil with water and vinegar in a spray bottle to cleanse and purify surfaces. Use to clean kitchen counters and stainless steel appliances. For stainless steel, mix Lemon essential oil with olive oil for best results.
Preserve What You’ve Got. Use Lemon essential oil in a spray to keep your cut fruit fresh until serving.
Refresh Bad Smelling Washcloths. When your kitchen washcloths smell foul and could use a boost, add Lemon oil to your detergent, soak overnight, wash, dry and your kitchen will smell so much better!
Nourish Your Leathers & Furniture. Preserve and prevent leather from splitting with a Lemon soaked cloth. Also, a few drops of Lemon essential oil combined with a few drops to olive oil makes a great furniture polish.
‘Lemonize’ Your Laundry. Instead of dryer sheets, try adding a few drops to a damp wash cloth in the dryer with the rest of your laundry. Be sure to set the dryer to a low temperature cycle as high heat will lessen the effects of the oil.
DEGREASER :: use a few drops of Lemon on a cloth to get rid of tough spots on your stove or bathtub, or any sticky residue anywhere. It also erases permanent marker on whiteboards
BODY DETOX :: lemon is a powerful detoxifier when taken internally. It helps cleanse and flush toxins from the organs, which gives you more natural energy throughout the day since those toxins aren't taxing your system anymore.
WATER FLAVORER :: add 1-2 drops to your water (in glass, aluminium, or stainless steel containers ONLY, no plastic!) for a healthy, detoxifying boost. It also tastes sweeter than lemon juice and is pH neutral (unlike lemon juice) because it's cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, so it won't affect tooth enamel.
SEASONAL SUPPORT :: Take 1-2 drops of lemon internally and/or diffused to help detox the body of seasonal threats and help you breathe easier.
WOOD POLISHER :: Lemon combined with olive oil makes a great wood and furniture polisher.
DUST WITH LEMON :: add a little bit of olive oil and lemon essential oil to a spray bottle and voila! You have an all natural dust mist that also cleans and deodorizes without the harsh chemicals.
LEATHER PRESERVER :: preserve and prevent leather from splitting with a lemon soaked cloth.
UPLIFT MOOD :: brighten and energize your mood by diffusing lemon essential oil in your favourite diffuser.
POLISH SILVER + METALS :: Lemon is great to use for the early stages of tarnish on silver and other metals.
ERADICATE GROSS SMELLS :: Diffuse lemon in your home to help get rid of any unwanted smells.
DECONGEST :: add a drop of Lemon with fractionated coconut oil to your chest if you or your little one is congested. Just be sure to NOT go out in the sun after apply to the skin. Citrus oils (as well as Lavender and a few others) are photosensitive, which means they make your skin for sensitive to sunlight.
SOOTHE SORE THROATS :: gargle with hot salt water, 2 drops of lemon, and 2-3 drops of On Guard to help relieve sore throats.
FRUIT + VEGGIE CLEANER :: use a few drops of lemon in a 60ml spray bottle with water and spray your fruits and veggies from the supermarket to wash away germs and pesticides.
LAVENDER
Take A Lavender Bath. Drop a bit of lavender essential oil along with Epsom salts to your bath water for an ultra-relaxing experience.
Head To Toe Rest! After a hard work out or a long day on your feet, rub Lavender along with Lemongrass on your legs and feet.
Take The Acid Out Of Vinegar. Add 4-5 drops of Lavender to your vinegar cleaning mixture for a more bearable scent.
Quick Fix. Mix three parts Fractionated Coconut Oil with one part Lavender essential oil in a small spray bottle or roll on to help clear up skin irritation associated with chafing. Great for little ones!
Bring on the ZZZ’s. Rub on the bottoms of the feet for a more restful sleep.
Enjoy A Fresh And Clean Mattress. Sprinkle a mixture of 1 cup baking soda and 10 drops of lavender essential oil over your mattress. Allow the mixture to sit for at least one hour then use the vacuum hose to clean it up. You can combine with drops of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Clove, or Rosemary as well.
Ouch! That’s Hot! The next time someone doesn’t realize the iron or pan is still hot; apply Lavender oil to the affected area to soothe skin irritation, reduce redness and ease swelling.
The Oatmeal Secret. Fill a baby food jar with oatmeal, and add 5-8 drops of Lavender oil. When it’s time to wash your face, add water and it becomes an excellent natural scrub! A little goes a long way.
A Sleepy Time Trick. A few drops of Lavender placed on a pillow will help a restless toddler (or adult) fall asleep and stay asleep.
Flavour Twist. Lavender adds a unique and delicious flavour to marinades, custards, breads, cookies, icings, and even honey and syrup.
Homemade Aftershave. Use after shaving to soothe and soften skin and to lessen the redness and burning caused by razor burn.
Take The “Ouch” Out. One drop of Lavender will help relieve the sensitivity of gums, dry or chapped lips, occasional scrapes and abrasions, or after too much sun.
Clear The Mind. Apply Lavender to the temples and back of neck to ease anxious feelings and stress and promote mental clarity.
Care For Your Baby Belly. Rub Lavender essential oil onto an itchy tummy while pregnant.
Therapeutic Dish & Laundry Soap. If your liquid soap smells a bit flat, you can add Lavender for additional aromatherapy benefits. It transforms your cleaning experience!
EASE SEASONAL THREATS :: Lavender is a natural antihistamine and helps calm your respiratory system during season changes.
SUN BURNS :: Add a few drops of lavender + peppermint to a 60ml spray bottle with water and spray your skin after a day in the sun without SPF.
SLEEP SUPPORT :: Massage a few drops of Lavender into the soles of your feet and diffuse in a diffuser by your bed for a restful night's sleep.
CHILL PILL :: Lavender helps calm the nervous system and ease stress. Put a few drops on your wrists to help ease feelings of nervousness.
MUSCLE ACHES :: 3-5 drops of Lavender can be taken internally in a veggie capsule to ease muscle + joint aches and pains naturally. Rub Lavender into your ear lobes when you feel head tension coming on.
BATH TIME :: add a few drops of Lavender to your Epsom salt bath for added relaxation.

TEA TREE OIL (MELALEUCA)
Say Goodbye To Razor Burn! Apply after shaving to prevent any skin irritation. You can also mix Melaleuca with a bottle of fractionated coconut oil for a great facial moisturizer. Consider also mixing with Lavender or Frankincense for added benefit.
Add “Oomph” To Your Lotion. Help soothe your skin by placing 1 drop of TEA TREE essential oil in your moisturizer during your morning and night skin routine. You can also apply to skin blemishes as part of a daily cleansing program.
Bathroom Cleaner. Combine 10 drops of TEA TREE with ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup vinegar to clean the toilet.
Refresh Your Wash. Add a couple drops of TEA TREE to laundry detergent to get rid of any musty smells caused by poor ventilation.
Homemade Baby Wipes. Cut a paper towel roll in half and place it in a storage container with 2 cups warm water, 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil and 3 drops each of TEA TREE and Lavender. When the liquid is absorbed, remove the cardboard roll and pull wipes from the centre.
For When Soap Won’t Do It. TEA TREE is great for removing permanent marker from skin.
Baby Bottom Remedy. Mix with Fractionated Coconut Oil, Lavender, and Frankincense to make a diaper paste for baby’s irritated skin.
Too Much Fun In The Sun? Apply to the skin during your family vacation or after a long day in the sun.
Sleep Feeling Clean. Spray TEA TREE on your mattress pad when you change the sheets.
Handy For Hikers. Take TEA TREE essential oil in your pack next time to take the off beaten trail. TEA TREE is a great cleansing agent for occasional scrapes and other skin irritations.
Learn From The Past. Historically, TEA TREE oil was used as a cleanser for the face and to deal with periodic skin and toenail challenges.
Boost Your Immune Function. Diffuse TEA TREE or rub it on the bottom of your feet. Combine with the On Guard blend for even more immune support.
Chemical-Free Cleaning. Dilute 8-10 drops with water in a spray bottle to clean around the house. It is great to use in damp places and in the bathroom!
A Young Athlete’s Best Friend. Apply directly to the feet and toenails after practice each night and especially if you are also showering, swimming or exercising in public, high traffic areas.
Healthy, Happy You. Massage onto the bottoms of feet and the chest area to promote overall health, especially during the winter. For occasional skin irritations, apply TEA TREE directly to the skin or dilute with a drop of fractionated coconut oil.
ZIT ZAPPER :: Dap a drop of TEA TREE on any skin blemishes to help kill bacteria and clear your complexion. Works great on problematic teenage skin without stripping the skin of necessary natural oils.
TOILET CLEANER :: Use with 1/2 Cup distilled white vinegar and 1/2 Cup baking soda to clean your toilet bowl. Flush the toilet, sprinkle the baking soda around the inside rim of the bowl so it sticks. Pour the vinegar over the baking soda and watch it foam up. Add 5-7 drops of TEA TREE and scrub the inside of your bowl. Flush and voila! Clean toilet!
DANDRUFF BE GONE! :: Put 2-3 drops of TEA TREE in your shampoo or massage into your scalp to help prevent scalp itch.
FUNGUS KILLER :: Massage 2 drops of TEA TREE and fractionated coconut oil into your toenail beds to help with toe fungus.
YOGA MAT CLEANER :: Add 5-10 drops of TEA TREE and 5-10 drops of Lavender to a spray bottle with water and use to clean your yoga mat after practice.
BYE BYE RAZOR BURN :: Apply after shaving to prevent skin irritation. Consider adding Lavender and Frankincense for added benefit.
SMELLY CLOTHES REFRESHER :: Add TEA TREE to your laundry detergent or soak smelly clothes in water with 3-5 drops of TEA TREE to get rid of unwanted smells in your clothes.

I like Essential Oils because they are natural, potent, small and easy to transport. But the biggest thing I like about them is that they all have multiple uses. For instance, Lemon Essential Oil is a great cleanser for your house, the air and your body. It is able to be used as a detox to help rid yourself of heavy metals etc that don't belong in your body. But Lemon is also great as a degreaser for dishes or even greasy parts of motors. And if it is diffused then it cleans the air. Imagine if you have been through floods and after you have cleaned up there will still be a smell lingering. Diffusing Lemon will literally clean the air in the house.
I am going to list about 10 different Essential Oils and pre made blends and why I feel they are absolute must haves for every prepper. Or even if you aren't a prepper these are the ones that should be in every home if you prefer going the natural road as we do.
Please remember when using Essential oils that you respect their potency. More is not better. You only need a drop or two usually. Did you know that 1 drop of peppermint oil is equal to 28 tea bags? That is to explain how potent they really are. Also remember to dilute them and if you are using them for kids or frail people that dilute them down even more.
I only use and recommend doTERRA Essential Oils because they are the purest on the market. I trust them for me, my family and my pets and I would never suggest that you ingest any other brand. The pre made blends I will mention here are all made by doTERRA.
PEPPERMINT
Support Healthy Breathing. Dilute a drop of Peppermint oil combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil and place under your nose to support open airways and help you breathe easily.
A Hot Feet Fix. Add Peppermint to a cold compress and cool down your overworked feet.
Break Away From Summer Heat. Keep a spray bottle of water with a few drops of Peppermint essential oil nearby, especially when you REALLY need to cool down!

FOCUS :: Rub a couple drops of Frankincense into your temples and at the base of your head when you're working on a deadline or need focused support.

Living off the Grid in my opinion, as I have said many many times, is all about being as self reliant as possible in ALL aspects of my life.
I like to know that we are in control of our own survival. That's why we manage our own power needs, our own water needs and as far as possible our own food needs. One of the biggest areas of surviving in life is obviously our own health. If we can't stay healthy we really can't cope with the day to day physical and emotional strains that this lifestyle can put you under.
I like to support our bodies by having an environment as clean as possible. We don't have chemicals in our water and we don't put chemicals on our food that we grow. And we avoid the synthetic chemicals that are in the pharmaceutical drugs.
I make a lot of different home remedies that work just as well, and quite often better than the prescription or over the counter medications. And they are NATURAL! When I make these home remedies they are always created with pure, organic ingredients.
I like to use Essential Oils in a lot of my home remedies because they are amazing in their ability to support the body to heal itself. They are also easily portable so that if a SHTF scenario ever did happen, they are able to be carried with us and take up very little room. We are able to have our own little medicine cupboard in a small bag that could make all the difference.
