Natural Household cleaners for Off Grid living

Today's modern home is loaded with toxic and polluting substances designed to make domestic life easier. But, the cost of these commercial, chemical-based products can be high. These products have long term health concerns for the family, and environmental pollution caused by their manufacture and disposal. In Australia, for example, many, many people suffer from allergies, asthma, sinusitis or bronchitis. Treatment for these conditions should include reducing synthetic chemicals in the home environment.

DIY Sunscreen

Who needs to use sunscreen? Hands up?

I don't like the look of the commercial sunscreens mainly because they have ingredients that to my mind sound dangerous and I've read enough to know that the more we can stay away from man made chemicals the better. Especially if we want to apply them to our bodies or worse still to our children or pets!!!!

This recipe has no nasties in it and you can apply it to your dogs nose if he needs it too. BTW you can substitute the lavender for helichrysum essential oil if you have it.

Let me know if you like it and make it.

Homemade Sunscreen

Ingredients:

10 drops lavender essential oil
1 tablespoon pomegranate oil
3/4 Cup coconut oil
2 tablespoon Zinc Oxide
2 tablespoon shea butter
Glass Jar

Directions:

Combine all ingredients except zinc oxide and essential oil in a jar.
Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water on stove over medium/low heat.
Place jar in saucepan and stir contents until ingredients start to melt.
Once all ingredients are combined, add in zinc oxide and essential oil, stir well. Store in a cool place.
Apply as required.

Pomegranate oil is great in this recipe because it has an spf of about 20 in itself, that's why it is included.

After putting this recipe together, a friend suggested that a tablespoon or two of Titanium Dioxide could be added safely and up the spf rating a lot.
Titanium Dioxide is a mineral. It is added to dog food so that dog poop dries white and powderises pretty quickly in the sun. It is a safe ingredient and I'll be adding it to my next batch to try it out.

Super White Powder

Okay it's not really blisteringly white, but a kind of beige colour, but it is full or the most amazing super foods. Everybody needs to figure out ways to get more nutrients into their diets and if you are like me there is just so much I can fit into my meals every day. I like to come up with ideas that help me get the most vitamins and minerals into us without us even realising that we are doing it. This is also a terrific idea for finnicky eaters or kids or elderly people.

This powder has the following ingredients:

Linseeds
Sunflower seeds
Almonds
Pumpkin seeds
Quinoa flakes

To make it just add equal amounts and blend it up until it's in powder form. Store it in a glass jar, in the fridge.

Now, why have I added these particular ingredients? Well the first three, you have recognised as the traditiona LSA mix and I added the others because they are super awesome as well, so why not pack as much into the powder as we can.

Linseeds, Sunflower seeds and Almonds (LSA), is an easy, extremely versatile way to add extra nutrients to meals. LSA is rich in protein, which helps to keep your blood-sugar levels balanced and curb sugar cravings. LSA will provide you with a rich source of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. This will help to promote a healthy heart and brain function, and it contains important minerals such as calcium, zinc and magnesium.

Pumpkin seeds have a wide variety of nutrients ranging from magnesium and manganese to copper, protein and zinc, pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses wrapped up in a very small package. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols and free-radical scavenging antioxidants,1 which can give your health an added boost. Because these are high-fiber seeds, they’re able to boost your fiber intake

Quinoa contains more protein than any other grain. It can help lower cholesterol levels as it is a great source of fibre and helps to promote cardiovascular health. Quinoa contains a range of important nutrients, such as iron and B vitamins, for red blood cell production and energy; calcium, for strong bones; magnesium, for nervous system health; and vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. It's also an ideal grain for diabetics as it has a low glycaemic index, which will help keep blood-sugar levels stable and prevent sharp spikes in insulin. You can use quinoa as a substitute for rice.

So, as you can see this powder is chockers full of the good stuff and so easy to include in your daily food.

I like to add a tablespoon to my smoothies, but you can add some to just about every dish you make. Try adding a tablespoon or two to sweet or savoury dishes. The flavour is not overpowering, so the powder can be added to just about anything you can think of. Try some in your next home made pizza dough, biscuits, cakes, stews, desserts, sauces or just about anything. You can even sprinkle it on your yogurt and fruit, or muesli.

Stop bleeding!!!!

You don't have to live off the grid to have an accident in the kitchen or out in the paddock or shed. Sometimes you cut yourself and need to stop the bleeding.

A great way to do this is to carry a little bottle of Styptic Powder in your pocket at all times, or at least have it somewhere that you can get to quickly.

I have a little bottle of home made Styptic Powder in my kitchen, in my first aid kit and one in the car. This is easy to make yourself from stuff you probably have in your kitchen cupboard (and if you don't, perhaps you should, lol).

Making styptic powder is simple, inexpensive, and it contains no harmful ingredients. Here's what you can use:
Yarrow: dried
Cayenne Pepper: dried
Stinging Nettle: dried
Comfrey Root or Leaf: dried
Cinnamon Powder: dried
Turmeric Powder: dried
Bentonite clay

Mix equal amounts of the powders together and pop them into a little bottle. That's it!!! Simple..... YEESSSSSS!!!!!!

If you don't have all the ingredients don't stress even using any of those powders on their own, can work, if you are caught out without your little bottle of prepared powder.

To use, apply the styptic powder to a wound and press lightly. The bleeding should stop within a minute or so. If the wound is large or deep, it may take a few tries.

I know what your saying.... oooh the Cayenne or the Nettle is going to sting too much to use, but for a start once nettle is dried it doesn't sting and while it’s true that cayenne pepper may cause some temporary stinging, it can help to desensitize the nerve receptors in a wound temporarily. Cayenne is antibacterial and anti-fungal, so it can really help with wound healing.

Make some today and have it ready for any accidents you have.

Obviously, if you need to visit a doctor if the wound requires stitches or whatever, then you should do that. :)

Why does everyone LOVE Franky???

If I could only take one essential oil with me if I had to bug out because the SHTF then Franky would be the one I would choose.

Frankincense Essential Oil is incredible because it has been used historically, for thousands of years, way before the dawn of modern medicine. Why? Because of it wonderful properties.

Analgesic,
Antidepressant,
Anti-fungal,
Anti-inflammatory,
Antiseptic,
Astringent,
Cellular protection,
Diuretic,
Expectorant,
Sedative

Hey, even The 3 Wise Men brought Frankincense as a gift to the baby Jesus and it was thought to have been a very valuable gift.

Frankincense is a white milky sap extracted from the tree bark of the Boswellia genustrees in African and Arabian regions. The sap is allowed to harden into a gum resin. It is a tedious process to extract and steam distill the drops of resin from this tree. Because of this process, the supply that is available and the wonderful properties of this plant, Frankincense is still quite valuable and is one of the more expensive essential oils today.

People always ask... what does it take to go off grid

What does it take ? a rather huge question that IMO there are a million answers to ?

This question is driven by quite a few things , just to mention a few , like personal circumstance ? personal strength , physical and mental , plus a persons capacity to learn many things that may seem mundane , but are quite complicated very often for many people to get a grip on ...

Can anyone go country and go off grid ? Nope !
There are a few basic facts that will determine who can and who cant do this or take this life style on ...

One could write a book on this I am sure , but to cover just a few things , I believe listing a few physical and psychological things that may effect anyone's capacity to do this should be looked at ...

Lets take money first ? If a person has little money and yet a need for all the physical comforts , then they are screwed before they start ... If a person wants to buy land and has little money they are pretty much screwed before they start . If you have the need for income especially your own generated income , then this becomes even harder for many ... If you are being subsidized by an external an payment like a pension or any payment from the system , then this would make like easier .. If not and you have little cash you are screwed or need to address this first some how ..

There is no way of really going off grid on your own property without some money , a small amount or a lot , it can be done but it takes a little money , of this , short term to start and long term to get by , there is no doubt about this ..

Another physical aspect is the work involved to take back ownership over your life living off grid ...

This can be effected by the money thing to a large degree for many .. If you have money? then you can buy your way into this no doubt , but if you only have the cash to perhaps buy a little land and just enough to set up the bare basics , then the effort require to get by will cause many to fail or at the min suffer quite a bit .. The effort required to set up an off grid life , maintain it and just do basics like growing a little food ect on top of any structural work required is immense , and many will under estimate this part of any attempt...

Skills required are another biggie that should not be under estimated by the new .. Again if you have cash to splash , then buying in all these required skills will not be an issue mostly .. But if you have to learn all these skills , you might want to asses your capacity to do just that , learn and them implement these new learned skills ?

Mind set will play a huge roll in anyone's success that attempts this , unless of course they are in the " I can buy my way in and sit back category " ? Mind set will determine if they are able to perhaps suffer a few things? , find the strength to cope with the effort ? and in many cases , go without a few things or allot? if they have little money ? ....

Mind set will come into play with all of the above and many many more things that will effect the individuals in many different ways ... On a psychological level , there are also many things that will come into play that many may think about , but I feel many new to this will not quite understand .. If you are like many off grids and doing the " bug out " from the urban night mare and have some cash and an external regular payment ? and no real need to work ? , then you might find that you will spend quite allot of time on your property and your time spent with others might be greatly reduced ?

This sets some new to this up for the issue of partial isolation ?

Now many new will say , I cant wait to get away from them , I want peace exct ect ... and that's quite normal , BUT too much of a good thing? can quite often be just as bad as just a little of a bad thing.. I feel that heading out on a new journey with , I am gone , off to my remote property can be a good thing , but it might cause a few to find them selves a year into this , to be re thinking that idea of being alone ?....

Isolation is a strange thing , its a bit like ice cream, , it is great in a small bowl , but grab the 4 liter container and knock it all off in one sitting and you may never want ice cream ever again ? I will leave my thought at this for the moment as , it can and would take a whole book to talk each aspect of this question in detail ..

What does it take to go off grid and attempt this life style in all its aspects ? ?

It takes many circumstances , physical and psychological things to fall into line to pull this off ...

Can anyone take this lifestyle on ? well yes , ALL can give it a go for sure , but will all make a success of it ? or hang in there as a long term life style choice that they never leave ? NO ....

cheers Steve ...

Vanilla

I'm going to be making a few different vanilla extracts today. Why? because who doesn't love vanilla? Vanilla doesn't just smell and taste delicious it's also really good for you. So we should never feel guilty about enjoying this yummo bean.

I like to use vanilla extract when cooking, especially when I make my ice cream or custard. But I also like to use different vanilla extract when I make my own salves and skin creams.

You can extract vanilla a few different ways so that you have different products for different purposes. For example extracting into alcohol which is the most common way. You can also extract it into glycerine to make a non alcoholic one or use a mixture of the two, half glycerine and half alcohol. You can make an Extra Virgin Olive Oil Vanilla extract and you can also make some Vanilla infused fractionated coconut oil.

The process is similar for all the extracts. Take 4 or 5 vanilla beans and slice them down the middle. Place them in a glass jar and fill the jar with the medium of choice. You will need to sit the closed jar somewhere for a few weeks and then strain through a coffee filter and voila.

If you are totally impatient, in the case of the oils not the alcohol or glycerine, you can place the jar into a saucepan with some water and let sit on the wood stove for a day or two as long as the stove isn't roaring hot that is. When I want to cook and have the stove hot then I just remove the saucepan and put it back when it has cooled down enough and leave it overnight. I actually prefer to leave it for a couple of nights like this.

One way I like to use the vanilla coconut oil is to make my roller blends with some essential oils added. You get the benefits of the vanilla and the essential oils and the coconut oil so it is a win win win!

The vanilla extracted into the glycerine or the glycerine/alcohol can be used to make an awesome room spray or body spray or added to your home made deodorant etc etc.

I hope you enjoyed this read. Let me know your thoughts or if you have any questions. cheers Kerri-Ann

What do you need???

How much does Solar cost? What do I need ?
What a huge question?

Are you new to this Solar Of living Off The Grid thing?

The whole thing, you by now have looked at? , you think you had if figured out? , then you get lost and wind up back where you started, with quotes all over your table that just give you a bloody migraine !

Well this post is maybe a better re starting point for you?
:- )

This question has many components to it, that does tend to do in the heads of the people new to it .
I am going to just put up my idea of perhaps where to start to answer this question in a basic and simple way .
Hopefully this will give you a few clues that will enable you to start the process in your own mind without the need for Panadol .

The first question that gets asked over and over here is how much does it cost ?
Well the answer to that is actually has near nothing to do with that question !
( ok now you just reached for the Bourbon or Panadol ) before I even get started ... lolol

If you are new , you need to take this step by step , without quotes that look like telephone numbers , or advice from me or anyone around you telling you that this is what you need ....

Before you even think about this , you need to go through these steps ..

1/ How much can I afford to spend ? and be honest with yourself !
( this determines some what, the answer to the next question ? )

2 / What are my needs ? and try to be half reasonable and remember you have to pay for this ?
( This answer will be effected by the first question largely ? )

3 / What could I get by with ? Stop and think about how much you could do to cut back on your urban life power use by !
( this will be more than likely wind up determined by the first 2 questions that you just answered )

4 / Then the last question , that is quite a biggie , what will be my choice of gear ?
( that also WILL BE determined mostly by the answers you give above as well ... )

OK you by now, if you have answered the above QUESTIONS to yourself honestly , you will have hit the bottle :- ) , or nailed three cups of tea or coffee to relax. lololol

This is all going well yes? lol, .. but hopefully you at least have not gone and stopped reading and asked more of the experts for quotes that scare the chit out of you because they look like telephone numbers and chosen to can the whole idea !! :- )

OK ... 3 drinks under your belt by now , you have chosen a figure that you can afford ... woohooo ! you are at a good starting point !

Now come the good bits .

1 / Your spend figure determines what size you can install.
2 / Your choice of gear determines how far your cash will go .
3 / Your system size and choice of gear determines what you will be able to run .

So you have read this far and you are still going well and have not had that 4th drink I hope as yet? lolol

Now for the hard yards ..

After you tear up those quotes that you thought you were going to have to deal with along with the therapy cost from the shock , take your spend figure and work out the details one by one ...

You know you possibly cannot afford a 10 KW solar array? , you know you might have to cut back on what you thought you needed ?
But what you do know, is that you now need to look at what you can afford and bloody ignore the rest :- )
( anyone with a bottomless cheque book need to not worry about everything else I have to say :- )

You might now wonder what you can afford ?
You might now wonder how much this gear you need is going to cost ?

1/ Well , Solar at 12 Volts can run basic gear and do most things for near pennies as compared with larger solar system costs usually go ...

2 / Installed gear costs way way more than gear you might be able to help install yourself ?

3/ Brand name gear burns up your budget at a far far greater rate .

4/ The optimum battery bank will eat up a huge chunk of your money available .

5 / Are you prepared for the costs regarding running a Generator back up on a smaller system ?

SO .. a few more questions need to be asked of yourself. ?

1/ Can you do any of the work ? ( mount panels ? , hook a few batteries up ? or just buy the gear yourself ? etc )

2/ Do you only want the best gear ? ( brand name gear is good , but it can cost like poison ! )

3/ Are you ok with batteries that may not be the absolute best on the market atm ? ( Lithium are the best but cost like poison too )

Once you go through a couple of lists like this you should be able to make choices that not only fit the biggest question asked , your budget , but you will know more about how much power you are going to be able to buy ?

I understand that none of this gives you an exact answer to your requirements or wants , but it should give you a starting point to step by step work though the rest of your system details without getting distracted by either huge quotes , or technical detail , that will just give you a huge head ache , if you have not set some parameters first using a step by step list to make sense of all the million options that will be thrown at you .

A few more quick facts based on my own experience .

12V is the lowest cost system no doubt and can and does do near everything that is required these days given what is available in 12 V
12V is not the most efficient but remember , the higher Voltage you go the more it costs generally .!

12V 24V 48V are usually the options given to you and are most commonly used .

NOTE :
As you go up in voltage as I said it will near double the cost of gear every time you jump up , from the equipment needed to the battery banks and panels required ..

Personally , I think using a mix is good , especially if you are on a budget. 12v can be low cost and do all lighting and small pump needs with no trouble , plus take some loads off your second main 240V system ... this may be worth looking into for you ?

I would like other existing OFF GRIDDER members to perhaps just post there basic system spec and ball park costs up , for all to look at as examples of the wide variety of sizes and cost for others to read and assess ..

This will help the new to see that many off gridders use many different systems and get by and are happy at many different levels of power ..

There are no definitive answers to any one Solar question , so all we can do is give you perhaps somewhere to start going through this in a logical manner .

I hope the new members looking at just starting out take the time to read all of this and ask there own questions .

cheers Steve and Kerri :- )

Essential Oils in a Preppers World.

If you are like Steve and I, you will no doubt have a preppers mentality. What I mean by this, is that we like to 'prep' for tough times. You never know what is around the corner. We have survived natural disasters here and we understand the need to be prepared. I have talked about this before and you will find an article around here if you want to read it. But today I want to talk about another idea. This one is about having essential oils, stocked and ready to use in your stores.

I like Essential Oils because they are natural, potent, small and easy to transport. But the biggest thing I like about them is that they all have multiple uses. For instance, Lemon Essential Oil is a great cleanser for your house, the air and your body. It is able to be used as a detox to help rid yourself of heavy metals etc that don't belong in your body. But Lemon is also great as a degreaser for dishes or even greasy parts of motors. And if it is diffused then it cleans the air. Imagine if you have been through floods and after you have cleaned up there will still be a smell lingering. Diffusing Lemon will literally clean the air in the house.

I am going to list about 10 different Essential Oils and pre made blends and why I feel they are absolute must haves for every prepper. Or even if you aren't a prepper these are the ones that should be in every home if you prefer going the natural road as we do.

Please remember when using Essential oils that you respect their potency. More is not better. You only need a drop or two usually. Did you know that 1 drop of peppermint oil is equal to 28 tea bags? That is to explain how potent they really are. Also remember to dilute them and if you are using them for kids or frail people that dilute them down even more.

I only use and recommend doTERRA Essential Oils because they are the purest on the market. I trust them for me, my family and my pets and I would never suggest that you ingest any other brand. The pre made blends I will mention here are all made by doTERRA.

PEPPERMINT

Support Healthy Breathing. Dilute a drop of Peppermint oil combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil and place under your nose to support open airways and help you breathe easily.

A Hot Feet Fix. Add Peppermint to a cold compress and cool down your overworked feet.

Break Away From Summer Heat. Keep a spray bottle of water with a few drops of Peppermint essential oil nearby, especially when you REALLY need to cool down!

Could You Start A Fire With Your Breath? Use a drop of Peppermint with Lemon in water for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse. It freshens breath and builds confidence in your close encounters.

Take A Deep Breath. Inhale deeply to invigorate lungs and increase alertness.

Stressed? Apply to neck and forehead with Lavender to relieve tension and pressure.

A Joint Effort. Peppermint is a great way to cool joints without taking an ice bath. It helps to soothe occasional muscle and joint discomfort.

Tummy Calmer. Rub on the stomach or take internally for occasional digestive discomfort.

Shake It Up. Add a drop of Peppermint to your chocolate Trim Shake for a yummy twist.

Zero To Satiety In Seconds. Most people eat until they feel full. Diffusing Peppermint will help reign in the urge to snack on junk food. It’s a good way to control appetite and to feel full faster.

Out On The Open Road. Don’t fall asleep at the wheel! Inhale Peppermint from a handkerchief or straight from the bottle to perk up on long drives.

Awaken Your Senses. Before your next work out, apply a bit of Peppermint to your chest or just take a deep breathe straight from the open bottle. Then, after your workout add to shampoo to stimulate your senses and help with scalp health.

Approaching Deadlines Means Long And Late Hours. Rather than grab a Snickers to revitalize you as you ‘go the extra mile’, deeply inhale Peppermint to feel revitalized and ready to go.

Un-Block Writer’s Block. Peppermint can support blood circulation and leave you feeling rejuvenated to keep those creative juices flowing. Simply spritz peppermint on child’s shirt before study time for improved concentration and alertness.

Savour The Combination. Peppermint makes a delicious addition to all things chocolate. Add a drop into your chocolate beverages and baked goods. Yum!

BUG REPELLENT :: Put 1-2 drops of Peppermint in your shampoo, laundry detergent, or on a dryer sheet carried in your pocket to help repel bugs. You can also put a drop on cotton balls and place around windows or other places in your home where bugs could get in.

MOUTH WASH :: Use a drop of Peppermint with a drop of Lemon or On Guard for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse.

SUN BURN SPRAY :: Put 2-3 drops Peppermint with 3-5 drops Lavender in a 60ml glass spray bottle and spray down after a day of too much sun.

MID-DAY PICK-ME-UP :: Drop 1 drop of Peppermint with 1 drop of Frankincense, Lemon, or Wild Orange in your palms, rub together, and take a few deep breaths instead of reaching for the Snickers. Also works better than coffee by itself in the morning!

BODY COOLER :: In the summer time, add 2-3 drops of Peppermint in a 60ml glass spray bottle and carry with you to the gym or anywhere you may sweat excessively. Whip it out and spray yourself down when you feel overheated. You can also rub a few drops into the soles of your feet and along your spine when you're not feeling well and your body is overheated.

RELIEVE STOMACH UPSET :: take 1-2 drops in a veggie capsule to alleviate occasional stomach upset.

SMOOTHIE REFRESHER :: add 1-2 drops to your favourite smoothie recipe for a refreshing twist.

HEAD TENSION :: when you feel head tension coming on, drink a full glass of water with a drop of Peppermint and massage Peppermint into your temples (away from the eyes). Put a drop of On Guard on the roof of your mouth, 1-2 drops of Frankincense on the crown of your head, and massage 1-2 drops of Lavender into your ear lobes for added benefit.

OPEN UP YOUR AIRWAYS :: having trouble breathing? Diffuse 2-4 drops of Peppermint or rub 1-2 drops between your palms and take a few deep belly breaths.

**NOTE: Peppermint is very potent, so less is more! A little goes a long way with this oil, so always start with just one drop and move on from there as needed. Also be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after using Peppermint before touching your face or eyes. If you ever happen to get Peppermint (or any other essential oil) in your eyes, wash them out with fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, or any other carrier oil. Water will only make it worse!

LEMON

Eradicate Undesirable Smells. The next time you have international potpourri of food simultaneously brewing in your apartment complex at dinnertime, be sure to diffuse Lemon to neutralize odors.

Get Rid Of The Sticky Stuff. If you unfortunately don’t have great water taste in your town, add Lemon to that pitcher of water in the fridge. Add ice. Shake well. You will love the flavour!

A Remodelers Friend. It is possible to have fresh paint on the walls and a fresh smell in the air! Diffuse lemon essential oil while you repaint or remodel your home.

Road-Trip Relief. The next time you going ‘over the river and through the woods’ on a family road trip, (with family or pets) a little Lemon on cotton balls (other absorbent material) spread over your air vents or goes a long, long way to create a more pleasurable trip.

Perk Up. First, diffuse lemon essential oil to brighten and energize your mood. Then, pamper yourself by mixing a few drops with Tea Tree and fractionated coconut oil and apply on tired, dry, cracked feet.

Flavour Boost. In soothing winter teas, you can simply add Lemon essential oil to warm water, an herbal tea and honey.

Pick-Me-Up.
